MAY 2022 – A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between IBTE and Industry Partners held at The Lecture Theater of School of Aviation, IBTE Sultan Saiful Rijal Campus on the 21st May 2022. 

The objective of the MOU signing was to formalize the collaboration between IBTE and 7 industry partners for the running of the recently endorsed Level II Apprenticeship Programme – Deck Rating & Engine Rating. As well as MOU signing for the renewal of expired MOUs under the Dual System Apprenticeship Programme – Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning. In total 18 industry partners participated in the signing of the MOUs.

Signing on behalf of IBTE were Dr Haji Mohd Zamri Haji Sabli, Director / Chief Executive Officer of IBTE, and Dr Suhaimi Haji Abdul Wahab, Acting Principal IBTE Satellite Campus. Witnessing the signing was the Guest of Honor, Yang Mulia, Awang Haji Muhammad Nazri bin Haji Muhammad Yusuf, Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Transport and Inforcommunications. Signing on behalf of the companies were representatives from each company.

Dr Haji Mohd Zamri said, “IBTE is a post-secondary institution in TVET (technical and vocational education and training) which has played a vital role in human capital development in the country.

“In addition to providing quality educational opportunities, IBTE is also committed to producing knowledgeable, skilled, innovative as well as highly cognitive graduates who can apply their skills in the real world of work.”

He added, “This is in line with the strategic plan of IBTE 2019-2024, which places the marketability of graduates as a critical agenda in achieving the established target of at least 75 per cent of graduates obtaining suitable employment with their qualification within six months after graduation.”

In realising the agenda of graduates’ marketability, he said IBTE must cooperate with industries to implement programmes that can raise the employability of its graduates.

The apprenticeship programmes also aim to realise the Brunei Vision 2035 of producing highly skilled workforce.

An apprenticeship is a program that trains a trainer to become skilled in a particular skill / trade. Apprenticeships combine hands-on work with classroom learning to train the apprentices. Apprenticeships are seen to be an essential way in improving vocational routes from school to work, which combines on-the-job learning and school-based training as an alternative option to full-time vocational schooling. 

Objective of Apprenticeships are: 

  • To support the Brunei Wawasan 2035 of highly skilled people.
  • To improve employers’ satisfaction through highly skilled, job ready apprentices.          
  • To increase the apprentices’ marketability and prospect of employment or to equip them to be an entrepreneur.
  • To provide cost effective relevant quality training for apprentices through learning from industry experts and utilization of facilities in industry.
  • To provide an individual authentic learning environment through competency-based training for the transition process and the world of work
  • To strengthen industries Corporate Social Responsibility and investment for Brunei human resource development. 

IBTE held a Market Day 2022 at Wafa Hotel & Apartment, Jalan Gadong on the 17 May 2022. The Market Day were specifically for the IBTE Graduates of 2019 to 2021 with the objective to provide a platform for graduates to seek and apply for job opportunities relevant to their qualification and to ease the process in which companies can obtain relevant man power for their workforce from the event. The market day also helped to strengthen the relationship between industries and IBTE. 

The guest of honour of the event was Yang Mulia, Datin Seri Paduka Dr Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohd Salleh, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Education who officiated the event. 

The event was organized by the IBTE Career Guidance Unit, under the Student Affairs Division and interested graduates were required to pre-register for the event and prepared their curriculum vitae (CV) to be ready to submit to the companies they were interested in and prepared to be called for interview on the same day .

A total of 26 companies offering over 400 job opportunities were present at the Market Day. We like to thank the companies that participated and we look forward to working with our industry partners again.

Berakas – A prize presentation was held for the winners of the BIMP EAGA Entrepreneur Competition held at The Lecture Theater of School of Aviation, IBTE Sultan Saiful Rijal Campus on the 28th April 2022.  The competition was held at The School of Energy and Engineering, IBTE Mechanical Campus on the 21st April 2022.

The winners of the competition get to receive cash prizes from the guest of honour for the event, Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Hamzah bin Haji Sulaiman, Minister of Education. The winning team received $2000, second place received $1500, third place received $1000, and consolation place received $200.

First prize went to Gamification, whom designed an educational board game especially to assist students age 12 years old and above to overcome difficulties in the students learning. Second prize went to SES Cares, a start-up that focused on providing ladies what they needed during their menstruation and empowering them with knowledge of women’s health and body. And the third prize went to Mended Design, whose business proposal aimed to eliminate fabric waste from used clothing by repurposing them into a new product that they could market.

43 teams submitted their proposal for the competition and 9 team were shortlisted to participate in the competition. Each team were mentored by various entrepreneurs to prepare them for the five minutes live pitch to a panel of judges that comprised of Awang Adna Shatriremie bin Hj A. Abd Rahman, Head of Entrepreneurship Innovation Centre, Ministry of Education; Hj Abdul Yusrin bin Dato Seri Laila Jasa Hj Mohd Salleh, Programme Director, Shell LiveWIRE Sdn Bhd; Jason Tse Tow, Financial Specialist, Darussalam Enterprise (DARe); member of the Brunei Darussalam BIMP-EAGA Business Council 2021-2024; and Awang Haji Syed Mohammad Yassin Haji Syed Anayatullah Shah, Young Entrepreneurs Association Brunei (YEAB). 

The BIMP-EAGA Entrepreneurship Competition 2022 was developed as a continuation of BIMP-EAGA Entrepreneurship Camp that was held from 6th to 8th of December 2021. The goal of the Competition was to cultivate local economic development by inspiring and supporting local entrepreneurs. By stimulating entrepreneurial activity and to encourage small businesses to create strong business pitches, this was to encourage the creation of new companies and the expansion of existing businesses in Brunei Darussalam.
