TVET Academy Programmes & Structure

Programmes Offered

The three programmes offered are:

  • The ‘Foundation in Technical Education’ programme (Full-Time for 6 months);
  • The ‘Certificate in Technical Education’ programme (Full-Time for 1 year and Part-Time for 1 year 6 months); and
  • The ‘Diploma in Technical Education’ programme (Full-Time for 1 year and Part-Time for 1 year 6 months).

All the programmes mentioned above are specifically designed for the following:

  • New IBTE Teaching Instructors with no teaching qualification

These are new instructors with qualifications in their areas of specialty. The majority lack industry experience and may find it rather difficult to make their teaching relevant to the real world of work. As they have no formal qualification in teaching, they also need to be given pedagogical training.

  • Industry personnel who are recruited by IBTE with no teaching qualification

The second group comprises people from industry with years of experience in a relevant work situation who already have the necessary technical qualifications. Brought into technical and vocational education training (IBTE), they primarily need pedagogical knowledge and skills to effectively function as instructors.

  • Instructors from other institutions and agencies with no teaching qualifications

These are instructors who have been employed in their trade or profession for some years and are selected for teaching in their own areas of specialty. They may have qualifications in their specialty area but lack the formal qualification in teaching.

  • Fresh graduates with no teaching qualification.

Both the Diploma in Technical Education (DTE) and Certificate in Technical Education (CTE) programmes lead to a teaching qualification. However, the ‘Foundation in Technical Education (FTE)’ programme is a bridging programme for those who do not meet the requirements of the CTE programme. Successful completion of the FTE programme will not lead to a teaching qualification but enable trainees to continue to the CTE programme. The main focus of the FTE programme will be to prepare the instructors with the necessary skills for them to pursue the CTE programme.

The curriculum designed for the proposed IBTE Training Academy’s DTE and CTE programmes are based on the Regional TVET Teacher Standards (RTTS) developed by ASEAN Member States (AMS) with the support of SEAMEO VOCTECH and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) in 2018.
