February 2023- In the past few decades, mental illness symptoms such as anxiety and depression are still overlooked and stigmatize by most people. These problems can affect the concentration, energy level, optimism and hindering performance, especially in students and it is something that cannot be ignored.

Six participants, made up of IBTE Counselor Co-ordinators, Welfare Officers and Student Affairs Officers attended the two days Basic Counselling Course conducted by counselors from Clarity Sdn Bhd; Todd Mcpherson and Dean Walters.

The objective of the course was to introduce the fundamental of counselling with the basic knowledge and skills of psychology and to provide awareness on the importance of mental health among individual, specifically the students of IBTE.

The course shared the methods applicable for a counselling officer to improve the counselling method in helping students by creating awareness and preventing mental issues among the students of IBTE.

The IBTE officers will be able to focus more on student learning needs. The IBTE officers will be able to identify, assist and support the needs of individual students. With the right course and skills, IBTE hope to produce officers with the basic counselling training following the current international practice.

Positivity in student mental health is an important part of the education system as it helps the student to feel safe and comfortable in their environment as well as their community, so they can build good relationships to interact with and to work together. A stronger mental health for the student will helps them learn better and discover their own potential in their abilities.

Seeking for help is not a sign of weakness instead it is a strength to face one’s own fear. Therefore, IBTE students are very welcome to contact the counselling officers, should there are anything that troubling them or in need of a person to talk to regarding their own issues.
