BRUNEI Darussalam will be participating in the 12th ASEAN Skills competition this year in Bangkok, Thailand, from the 30th August until the 4th September.
Representing Brunei are 6 IBTE students, competing in three categories. Two students from School of Hospitality & Tourism will compete in the Cooking competition.
Four students from School of Energy & Engineering and another two will be competing for the Refrigeration & Air Conditioning competition and two other students will be for Welder competition.
Sending them off this morning were Acting IBTE CEO Dr Zamri , IBTE Central Principal Sheikh Lukman, and Head of School of Hospitality and Tourism, and Cikgu Kamarul. As well as the students teaching instructors, families and friends.
Leading the delegation to Bangkok is IBTE Deputy CEO Cikgu Boon, and Cikgu Mohammad Fadhil bin Haji Abu Bakar as Group Head.
IBTE Satellite Principal Cikgu Norjemee will be waiting for them in Bangkok as he had already travelled ahead as head of the Technical Delegates, to attend meetings prior to competition begins.
Some 300 participants from 10 ASEAN countries will compete in 26 skills area this year.

INSTITUTE of Brunei Technical Education (IBTE) yesterday inked Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with 10 business establishments, for apprenticeship programmes in professional cookery and services.
The businesses are Millennium Restaurant, Mulia Hotel, Radisson Hotel Brunei Darussalam, Royal Brunei Catering Sdn Bhd, the Royal Brunei Polo and Riding Club, The Brunei Hotel, The Empire Hotel & Country Club, The Rizqun International Hotel, Wafa Hotel and Apartment and the Yi Yuan Ting Fine Dining Restaurant/Li Gong.
The guest of honour was Acting Commissioner of Labour under the Ministry of Home Affairs Muhammad Saufi bin Haji Ibrahim, who witnessed the signings.
The Acting Director and CEO of IBTE, Dr Haji Zamri bin Haji Sabli said, “The MoUs highlight the hospitality and catering industry’s continuous support of our local youths, with the marketable skills necessary for their future and consequently, for our national development.
“I believe this programme will foster an enduring partnership between IBTE and the industry, while providing training for our youth to fulfil the market demand in Hospitality and Catering.

“This apprenticeship programme provides what we refer to as ‘on-the-job training (OTJ)’, which has proven to be among the most effective and necessary training schemes in developing a skilled workforce, by encouraging the apprentices to acquire the essential skills for actual tasks in a real-world environment.”
Currently, there are 143 students enrolled under the NTec Apprenticeship in Professional Cookery and Services from the School of Hospitality and Tourism, at the IBTE Sultan Saiful Rijal Campus.
The Dual-System Apprenticeship module at IBTE is carried out on a block release basis, during which the apprentices are obliged to undergo a year of institution-based training and another year of on-the-job training.

STUDENTS should equip themselves with proper skills and the right attitude to gain employment, said Principal of Central Campus at the Institute of Brunei Technical Education (IBTE) Campus Dr Sheikh Lukman bin Sheikh Abdul Hamid.
Employers nowadays give priority to people with the right attitude and commitment, he said.
He made these comments in his welcoming address at a ceremony when IBTE entered into an apprenticeship partnership with 13 companies with the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) yesterday at the Lecture Theatre of the School of Aviation, IBTE Sultan Saiful Rijal Campus at Jalan Utama Berakas.
The signing ceremony was witnessed by Acting Commissioner of Labour at the Ministry of Home Affairs Zulhilmi bin Haji Abidin. Dr Sheikh Lukman and CEO of IBTE Dr Chin Wei Keh signed on behalf of IBTE Sultan Saiful Rijal Campus.
Thirteen representatives from Ams-oil Pro Auto Services Sdn Bhd, Bee Motors Sdn bhd, Bengkel Kereta Berakas Sdn Bhd, Boustead Sdn Bhd, GHK Motors Sdn Bhd, Grand Motors Sdn Bhd, Hock Siang Hin Automotive Parts and Service Centre, Jati Transport Sdn Bhd, NBT (Brunei) Sdn Bhd, Premier Motors Sdn Bhd, QAF Auto Sdn Bhd, Setia Motors Sdn Bhd and TCY Motors Sdn Bhd also signed the agreements at the event.
The apprenticeship programme aims to help foster a long term partnership between IBTE and the industry to help train students and develop their skills as technicians needed by the industry.
Dr Sheikh Lukman said the cooperation between IBTE and the relevant parties has helped in the development of the curriculum and bridged the gap in skills and expertise. The cooperation also presents students the opportunity to gain invaluable experience and training in terms of practical and theoretical aspects, he added.
He stressed that the relevant parties should prepare for the challenges in human resources in the 21st Century. IBTE has been successful in producing apprentices in various fields and the existing collaboration has been successful, he added.
With the current Dual Apprenticeship Scheme programme, it is hoped that the industry can assist in employment by providing guidance and the right platform, he said. Twenty-five students are enrolled under the NTec Apprenticeship in Automotive Technician programme at the IBTE Mechanical Campus. They will undergo an on-the-job training with the 13 companies.

Dk Nur Hayatul Muta-Wakillah binti Pg Raithulliah, a student from IBTE School of Business was granted a $10,000 start-up fund under the LiveWIRE Business Awards Start-Up Funding Scheme (BASFS).
The scheme is a brand new initiative by Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn Bhd (BSP) through LiveWIRE Brunei and the received grant is to be repaid over a period of 36 months without interest.
Hayatul was one the entrepreneurs who are among the top winners of the LiveWIRE Brunei Business Awards in Category B (Enterprise) – LiveWIRE Business Start-Up (six months to three years in business), focusing on sustainability, good governance and growth potential.
Her business plan on Roy’s Car Wash will utilize the funds on procuring professional tools for cleaning, upgrading infrastructures, and expanding the business revenue streams. The business is currently operating in Jalan Pasir Berakas in Lambak and only hires local staff as part of their initiatives in providing employment among Bruneians.
SIXTY-THREE IBTE students received a Condition of Employment (COE) by 15 participating companies from various industries for the COE Market Day held on the 19th to 24th March.
The COE was a collaboration between IBTE and Ministry of Energy and Industry which aims to help and reduce the mismatch of skills and talents, with the alignment of programmes according to the industry needs.
During the Market Day, students from the ICF HNTec and NTec programmes visited company’s booths to look around for positions that are relevant to their programmes and submitted job applications to chosen companies.
Students who passed their interviews were offered placement by the relevant companies as part of their training.The students received their COE at a presentation that took place at the hall of IBTE Mechanical Campus.
Present as the guest of honour was Principal IBTE Satellite Campus, Jemee bin Jenek who also presented the COE.A total of nine ICF programmes with 246 students attended the event.
ICF programmes involved are HNTec Plant Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Instrumentation and Control Engineering, Construction Engineering, Design and Draughting, Electronic Engineering, Hospitality Operations and NTec Apprenticeship in Professional Cookery and Services.The companies involved in the Market Day comprised of Adinin Works and Engineering Sdn Bhd, Amec Foster Wheeler, Expro Sdn Bhd, KCA Deutag, Mozzat, Aegis Secure Data Solutions, Olive Tree Corp, Tambak Kayangan, SPHI Marine, Megalift, Syarikat Sariah Sdn Bhd, Mashhor General Contractors (MGC), Tekad Fajar Sdn Bhd, Swensen’s Café and Restaurant and Danne Burger.

The exchange programme is set to take place from the 5th of August to the 18th of August 2018.
The main objective of this exchange programme is to increase close collaborations between both of the educational institutions in increasing awareness in health perspectives. This is hoped to be done via exposing and increasing the awareness within the host’s institutional and clinical venue of Hospital Singapore, the Singapore Health Care System, and Nursing by the country’s standards, and also by identifying the differences in nursing practices and education between the two host countries, Brunei and Singapore, while also developing an appreciation of the different cultures.
The exchange programme will also offer the students of IBTE ATC the opportunity to be attached to the Medical and Surgical Unit in Singapore Hospital during the second week.
